Apollo was associated with poetry, music, light, and prophecy. He represented the societal ideal of a balance between power and virtue which earned him the reverence of both the Greeks and Romans.
The motif originates from an antique intaglio carved by the esteemed 17th century engraver, Nathaniel Marchant, who in turn referenced the Belvedere Apollo sculpture created in the 2nd century AD.
